Iron Man

Before the ironing pile got to the point of toppling over, I thought I’d better have a go at clearing it. And in order to make it more palatable, I decided to watch the F1 qualifying highlights at the same time.
Certainly was an exciting session and qudos to George Russell for getting a Williams into P2. At the same time, commiserations to Lando Norris, who was surely destined for a top 3 position - if not pole - before his high speed crash at Eau Rouge.
Spa is the only F1 circuit I’ve been to besides Silverstone. A friend and I left work on a Friday night in 1997, drove down to Folkestone in all the bank holiday weekend traffic and caught the midnight train through the tunnel. Then it was a long drive through France and Belgium, arriving at the circuit just in time for qualifying on Saturday. After the race on Sunday, we did the whole thing in reverse, arriving home some time on the Monday evening. And then back to work on the Tuesday morning! Not sure I could do that nowadays!
But I do remember how changeable the weather could be. We sat in an open grandstand in brilliant sunshine, watching dark clouds appear. Just before the race started, the heavens opened and drenched everybody. The race started on wets, but then the sun came out again and dried everything off. Unfortunately for the rest of the field, Michael Schumacher had built up such a lead on the opening damp laps that he won by a country mile!
Good memories, and I would love to go back there at least one more time once Covid is behind us.
The rest of the day was taken up by a PT session in the morning and more song practice in the afternoon. My nephew and his girlfriend dropped by - to borrow some maps and guide books - on their way to Keswick for a weeks walking holiday in the Lakes. I don’t think they really have any idea as to how busy it’s going to be this week - fine weather, no foreign holidays and the easing of restrictions will probably mean they’ll have to queue up to get on the summit of the more popular fells!
