Doors Open Day

Ben wanted to look into the house of William Soutar, a Scottish poet, and whose house was gifted to the Council by Soutar’s father who was a master joiner. The house is on his way to School and they have learned some of the poems, which are in broad scots, in the classroom. The house was fabulous. From the road it looks not much at all but it goes a fair way back with many interesting rooms and amazing amount of storage! A proper house not like nowadays when they build tiny rabbit hutches cos the land is a ridiculous price ! Anyway, there was a great cupboard with a tiny bit of glass which we told Ben could be used for locking naughty kids in (joke)! Soutar developed a debilitating form of arthritis while studying in Edinburgh (1919). By 1930 was bedridden. His father extended his bedroom and made a big picture window out to the large garden which then would have views right up to Craigie Hill. It was an interesting visit and enjoyed nosying around the house (without a guide saying don’t do this don’t do that).

Need to step up my foraging/hunting skills. By Christmas we may be sitting huddled round a candle eating berries and toasted marshmallows with pickled pigeon or fried rabbit.

Welcome to Brexit Great (not) Britain.
