Way up north

Woke up to see a complete cover of cloud on the Burg. We'd already decided to drive up to the north end of the island to Tobermory, 50 miles, around 40 of which is single track with passing places, not surprisingly quite tiring! They have an outdoor local market every Monday, selling local meat, vegetables, crafts and other odds and ends.

We had hoped to find a café or similar for lunch, but the town was busy and social distancing has reduced the number of tables, so we bought sandwiches and sat outside in the beginnings of a gentle drizzle, overlooking the classic colourful houses which Tobermory has become known for. The Western Isles Hotel sits up on the hilltop. The yellow building is the Mishnish Hotel, where Mrs M and I stayed on our first visit to Mull back in 1972!

On the way back we stopped at a small coastal car park at Garmony, which for obvious reasons will be turning up in a limerick some day! A little further along the road we stopped again at the graveyard at Pennygown - I love nosing round these ancient sites; I've put a couple of extras on. Apart from many old gravestones, including some supported Celtic crosses (tied to their supports with nylon cable ties!) there's the remains of the early 13th century chapel, a ruin since the mid-17th century! If only the stones could talk!

The drive from Craignure takes you over some high ground and the cloud was down to the road - very gloomy and spooky! Back at Bunessan it's a lot clearer - the sun was very nearly out!
