Life is a Dance

I spent too much quite a bit of time this afternoon chasing around a bevy of Long-legged flies. Dolichopodidae, are a family of true flies with more than 7,000 species. Through my 60mm macro lens I watched as this one captured a hapless little 'hopper'. If you look closely you can see it's little beady eyes wide with 'surprise?'! This, of course, is a view of the capture from the rear of the fly. These little flies actively search for tiny little insects on the surface of large leaves. This one was hunting on some Amaryllis leaves. Do take a look at the *extra...these two Long-legged flies were engrossed in some type of 'dance'. It wasn't apparent whether their 'Tango' was aggressive or mating behavior. The slightly larger one would flutter it's wings and follow the smaller one around. As I watched this drama, it crossed my mind that this is how flies parish since there were several Brown Anoles on the Amaryllis plants. Such drama on a very small scale!
