Thrust

We were very fortunate to enjoy a couple of hours of sunshine this morning whilst we ranged back and forth across Knockan Crag in the Geopark and National Nature Reserve, just a few minutes north of where we are staying.  The Crag was the scene for one of the longest standing arguments between geologists and this part of Scotland encompasses some of the World's oldest rocks.

The trail took us across the Crag and up on to the top with places to pause and read the interpretation boards or to enjoy the artwork installations which fit perfectly in the geo landscape.  The views from the top were fabulous with Lochan an Ais in the valley below setting off the Corbetts of Cul Beag and Cul Mor, then further back we could see Stac Pollaidh through the gap in the peaks one way, with Suilven and Canisp further round.  We could also see Ben More Coigach, the mountain above our cottage.

My blip is of the artwork Thrust which captures and reflects the Moine Thrust where, following a fault the older rocks have ended up on top of the younger ones.  If you need any more geology you will have to google it!

We returned to the cottage for cuppas and croissants then put our walking boots back on and took the trail from the cottage to the beach at Canas Mor and the iron age fort of Dun Canna.  It was tough underfoot in places but worth it for the views across to the Summer Isles and the An Teallach Range, sadly no sunshine now as the threatened front moved nearer.

We will take the next few days as they come as the weather forecasters seem to be in disagreement as to what we might expect.

Please do view in large.
