The simplest things

Whoops, I think I may have gotten this wrong, and it should have been inventions of the 18th Century. In which case I'm over hundred years too late :-)  Because I thought Mono Monday's theme for today was 'inventions of the 19th century'. Anyway I'll leave it like this ! Did you know that paperclips were only invented in the late 1800s ? Such a simple thing but quite important, in fact seen as one of the great inventions of the 19th Century. To quote from the web : " ... for centuries people used straight strings and pins as fasteners, which damaged documents. Samuel Fay invented the first paperclip in 1867 and patented it as a ticket fastener on April 23, 1867. Over 50 designs were copyrighted before 1899, none of them resembling the current paper clip design.
William Middlebrook designed the modern paper clip. Middlebrook also developed a paperclip-creating machine as early as April 27, 1899. He sold the patent to Cushman and Denison in 1899 who created "GEM," a trademark for their paperclips. In 1903 George Mc Gill patented a design that resembles today’s version of paper clips."

BTW, we keep ours in one of my Weck jars, another late 19th Century invention :-) These jars to preserve food were originally developed by a German engineer, Rudolf Rempel around 1880. Johann Carl Weck was a German entrepreneur who bought the patent to these jars in 1895. He started his own factory on the 1st January 1900 and the factory is still working today :-)
