A Day In The Life

Baby Red Love

I just can’t resist these baby red squirrels. I look for them daily knowing they will be fully grown soon. In fact it’s likely most of them will relocate to a different area • Per State University of NY red squirrels typically have two broods of 3-5 “kittens” per year, in April and August. We can assume the cuties I’ve been blipping were born in August • They emerge from their nests at 42 days, nurse until 70 days, and reach adulthood at 125 days. Juveniles must acquire a territory and a burrow before their first winter to survive. That doesn’t give our baby reds much time! • I love their description of red squirrels: they’re solitary, sedentary, promiscuous, and territorial (they can defend from 1-8 acres) • Unfortunately they have many predators too and many don’t live beyond 2-3 years • We must enjoy these little reds for as long as we can :)
