Pin money

Did you know that the term pin money comes from the fact that metal safety pins were quite expensive? So men would give their wives some 'pin money' to buy the necessary pins for their clothes ...
The metal safety pin where the sharp point was actually covered so it was safe for the wearer was invented by an American mechanic Walter Hunt in 1849. Actually there were clothes pins for centuries, probably from the moment people started wearing sown clothes. The Roman 'fibula' was an example.
