If you can't beat them...

Robin ( Erithacus rubecula )

, Robins always catch the eye.  There are obvious reasons why it has become the country's national bird Its looks and nature being two.  They are friendly and often join you while gardening scooping up any "wee beasties" you may disturb.  I am given to understand that in some European countries they are timid birds found mainly in foliage around woodland edges.

They like many small birds only live for a couple of years with one breeding season.  However, the record for age (set by ringing data ) is 8 years 4 months, and 30 days.  They tend to stay very close to the area in which they hatched.   However, there have been some ringing recoveries from abroad, some notable ones are Switzerland, Poland, Morroco, Italy and Russia.
