Folkestone Harbour

At last a sunny day, but still bitterly cold. We decided to go down to the coast at Hythe and walk along the seafront to Folkestone, have some lunch and walk back. We've done this walk many times before but this time it was to count as part of our ambition to walk the Saxon Shore Way this year. Although this route was 8.5 miles only half of that count as we did a circular walk ending up back at Hythe.

We walked into the wind all the way to Folkestone and had the wind behind us all the way back - truly a walk of two halves.

Folkestone harbour was at its best today. The tide was in so the boats were floating rather than grounded on mud. The sun was bright and colours clear. I liked the lines this composition has, the viaduct in the background carried the, now redundant, Folkestone Harbour Branch line from the mainline to Folkestone Harbour Station. Once well used this line was the way the Boat Trains reached the Harbour for the ferry to France. Alas, Folkestone Harbour is a shadow of itself with no commercial traffic at all.

Lunch was disappointing. No jacket potatoes, no pickeld onions or apple for the Ploughmans and the "Smugglers Ham" was standard packet ham. Enjoyed the coffee though and it provided some ballest for the walk back.
