A beautiful irony

I have never before seen irony so beautifully illustrated as I did this morning when a school boy smacked into a pavement-mounted road sign, which read “Diversion”.

I had to stifle a belly laugh whilst the wee ones looked up at me with grins on their faces. I should add at this point that the lad was absolutely fine, he bounced back quickly to the jeers of his peers, suffering no more than wounded pride. Let’s be honest: we’ve all been there.

The big news from today though is that m’boy was one of a few children from his school interviewed by the local radio station about climate change. I’ve not heard it yet, but it goes out Monday morning. They’ve also written to Alok Sharma (President of COP26) expressing their concerns about the same. Very proud of him and hope that his contribution survives the editing process!

Quite a rare occasion this morning, as to a sheer fluke of timing the wee ones walked into school at the same time and on the same route as The Eldest. It would have been a wasted opportunity not to embarrass her, so in the loudest voice possible I told her that I thought it was lovely she’d asked her dad to walk her into school, but I couldn’t understand why she didn’t want to hold my hand. Her ladyship was not amused.

It’s a dangerous game and I am fully aware that one day the tables will be turned, my bluff will be called and it will be me stood there, cheeks burning with shame as a wry smile weaves its way across my face.
