Chicken of the Woods

David told me where to find this fungus yesterday when he came by with a hatful of oyster mushrooms. The portion of the stump it is growing on gives an indication of how big it is. David is a born forager and loves fermenting things, grafting things and foraging for edible things. He’s an interesting and entertaining man.

I don’t think we’ll be eating this, but it looks like something took a good sized bite out of it and didn’t like it!

John and I were feeling a bit fed up and out of sorts with each other this morning but things improved rapidly when we met Gail for coffee at Trail House, and Danielle made a special work of art on my coffee.* Gail is an esthetician and gives wonderful facials. I go once a month to be pampered by her, but this morning she volunteered to attend to a few blemishes on John’s face at her office just across the street. To my amazement, he agreed! Everybody loves Gail….

Our mood had improved so much that we were actually able to go to Costco and buy a new downy for $119! We trudged past the woman giving out samples of pumpkin pie, the fake Christmas tree display, the massive containers of potato chips and pretzels, appliances in a new color I could only describe as ‘puke’ although perhaps ‘taupe' would be kinder, if less descriptive.  We eventually found the stacks of comforters, grabbed one along with a couple of bottles of wine for good measure and got in line to check out. We had walked 1,000 steps just looking for the down comforters, which I had already spied on Monday when I was there for my Covid booster.

Note to self…never go to Costco on a Friday afternoon. Miraculously, our mood adjustments held and John held it together even though we had to wait in line for more than ten milliseconds (more like 10 minutes).

And now the chores are done, and it is Friday afternoon. Friday is really no different  than any other day, yet still a certain cheer and optimism does seem to infuse even our Fridays.

Hope yours feels likewise….
