Lathyrus Odoratus

Brittlegills

A festively coloured fungi nestling among the leaves on this morning's gloomy damp walk in the woods with the spaniel. Its a Russula (also known as the Brittlegills) but since there are over 200 types of Russula in Britain (and 750 worldwide), many with red caps, I can't get much further than the genus level on this one. Given its location and characteristics my best guess would be the Beechwood Sickener (Russula nobilis), although finding it in December is a bit unusual.
