A Day In The Life

Mourning No More

MrsP counted 24 mourning doves feeding on the ground under the feeders today. And that isn’t all of them. It’s the largest group we’ve ever had here at the house. When not gulping up seeds, corn and nuts, they roost high in the trees around our property. They’re especially fond of slumbering around the heated birdbath after a snowstorm • I find their black markings most interesting, especially in contrast to their muted coloring. They’re not a favorite of many but that’s not the case here • Did you know they mate for life? No wonder the song goes “two turtle doves” and not one :) They’re also capable of flying up to 55mph which I can vouch for. I’ve often witnessed this when driving into the yard, or suddenly opening the door, when they’re nearby eating. They all take off at once, soaring to the treetops! • A couple of inches of snow fell this morning but sunshine returns tomorrow!
