Tales of Treason

This morning we cycled  into Winchester for a great  ukulele class, and then into the  city centre to visit a few shops. It seemed very quiet for lunchtime, and even the normally busy  Eclipse Inn, close to the cathedral, appeared closed. It is supposedly  haunted by Dame Alice Lisle who was sentenced to death for  harbouring two dissenters after the 1685 Battle of Sedgemoor. She was held overnight  at the Eclipse Inn, where a scaffold had been built outside. The next morning she  walked out of an upstairs window where she was beheaded.

This evening we attended the  local film club's monthly meeting .Tonight we watched "The Courier" starring  Benedict Cumberbatch and Merab Ninidze, which is based on the true story of the  British businessman, Greville Wynne, who was recruited by MI6 and who got involved in passing  on crucial intelligence from a Soviet officer called Oleg Penkovsky in the early  1960s, at the the time of the  Cuban Missile crisis. I found it very gripping, especially as I didn't know the  story  and how it ended. Well worth seeing.
