Smashed!!

This is an apt word for at least 25% of our customers up to around 8PM last night. It is also very apt for what remains of our main window!

The window spontaneously cracked about a month ago and was temporarily fixed with what looked like clingfilm-sized Sellotape. I arrived at work tonight to find it boarded up. The floor tiles inside the shop have also been damaged by the heavy crashing glass. I had no idea what had occurred overnight, so I could give no detail to every single curious customer that asked!

When Hekmat came at the end of the night I found out that it had been deliberately smashed and someone was caught on CCTV doing it - the police have the footage.

I don't know if there was anything happening yesterday but many "mature" people had spent the whole day drinking in the pub. We had some awkward and difficult people to deal with. One guy who thought he was a comedian jokily accused another similar-aged and drunk man that he did not know of being the person who had broken the window. Chap number two did not see the funny side and took great exception. Things got heated quickly (Unlike the kebab they were waiting for!) and there was almost a fight before the offended second man left in high dudgeon.

If it had been the shop I used to work in it would almost have been par for the course but this is the first time I've known a night like this in this shop.

My theory is that people's attempts at "Dry January" have dramatically crashed and burned, and they thought they may as well consume the entire months' normal consumption of alcohol in one day!

Hope this evening will be better!
