A walk around Gait Barrows, a National Nature Reserve dominated by limestone pavement (extra). And then the adjacent Coldwell Meadow from which I took this photo.

The Arnside and Silverdale area has many wonderful meadows, which in spring through to summer burst into floral life. Part of the management regime involves grazing by livestock at the appropriate time, which helps fertilise the soil.

It is difficult to believe, looking at these meadows in winter, that there will be such an abundance of plants flowering and seeding here as the year progresses.
