Birnbeck Island

We scooted down to Weston Super Mare for a brief walk along the seafront before the anticipated rain came in.

For a time it was bright and sunny, and the overnight winds had rolled large balls up the beach made of conglomerated sand, stone and shell, shaped by the wind into quite surreal sculptures. Janet was quite sure they were returned lumps of sea-dumped effluent - and in these times who is to say she is wrong?

I imagined doing some people photography for a change, but in the forecasted conditions hardly anyone was out despite the sunshine. Which didn't last long. So instead, a nine frame panorama of Birnbeck Pier, slowly falling into dereliction. The pier, not the photograph. The original was too much for blip, a little over 200MPx.

In recent months a compulsory purchase order has been agreed and the island has passed into ownership of the local authority. Aspirations are to restore this grade II pier, but it's going to take more than aspirations...

Storm Eunice hits us tonight - a red weather alert, and the first I can remember in this region. This may be the last photograph of the pier before it is blown off the island! The rest of the day will be spent tying down everything I can lay hands on. Janet, behave, for goodness' sake!
