At the Old Mill.

The river Chelmer in Chelmsford has always caused problems since Roman times. It was a fast flowing river that races to the Blackwater Estuary at Maldon. There are many mills that stand on its banks including the one where I grew up. This photo was taken by me in the 1970’s. My father was the master miller and when the mill started up the whole building shook and our cottage too. On a Saturday morning there was no staying asleep in bed, it was our alarm call from Dad. One of the additional photos is my father at work in the mill. The second is a photo taken in 1947 of my grandmother and the Stevens family. I recognise my great grandmother Elizabeth. Robert Stevens my grandmother’s brother.
