Our children don't "give" us power over their lives. Like missionaries, we come in and show them the light, then we leave them alone so they can use it.

We cannot be held responsible if they fail, any more than we can take credit if they succeed. We must try to understand that our children's lives are their own. We're happy for them, sad for them, humiliated for them, proud of them. But we are not them.

Finally, if we learn to accept this truth --- that we can not "arrange" our children's happiness --- we will grow into this job.

Remember, no matter how much you love your children, you are not solely responsible for their happiness.
