Another Place

I travelled to Crosby beach this afternoon to have a look at the identical sculptures, all modelled on Anthony Gormley’s own body, that along a 2 mile stretch face out towards Liverpool Bay and the Irish Sea.

It was high tide when I arrived, and the sculptures were submerged. Very windy, and exhilarating. Gradually they started to emerge from the sea. When they were positioned here in 2005 it was a temporary installation to be removed in 2006. They’re a hit with visitors, and the location works really well. Sefton Council now owns them, and they’re not going anywhere - Anthony Gormley oversaw their renovation last year - a few had sunk below the sand out of sight.

Extras - a view south as the tide receded, with the Docks and Liverpool’s distant pier head a backdrop. Another view north - the red debris on the foreshore is hundreds of thousands of bricks, moulded by the sea over the last 70 years. They the debris of Liverpool’s bomb debris from the Second World War. And a colourful starling, coming into its breeding plumage.
