R.I.P Shirley Hughes plus World Book Day

There was a lovely obituary for Shirley Hughes in the newspaper today and an article about her too. She wrote so many lovely children’s books in a very long career, both writing the story and illustrating them.  I checked which books we still have from when our children were young and found this selection. I only kept a few of the books they enjoyed for visiting children and possibly for grandchildren, which we now have and they enjoy them too!
It’s a very ‘dog-eared’ Dogger book which was one of her first successful books originally published in 1977.

Appropriate that it is World Book Day today. I went to the twins primary school this morning to see the parade of all the children in reception and Year 1 who came to school dressed up and were asked to bring the book of their character too. Such a variety.

Our two were dressed as Janet Smed and Bill Smoo as per the book cover. This is by another popular author Julia Donaldson. They had seen it dramatised at the Rose theatre Kingston recently. I managed to make a green wig by using wool sewn onto a swimming cap ( from instructions I found on Pinterest).

Another chilly grey day.
