A Day In The Life

Deer Salad

One of my daily afternoon tasks is prepping salad for the dear deer. Tonight’s snack includes iceberg lettuce, apples and carrots. I’ll add a few scoops of high-calorie deer pellets, then generously sprinkle (pour) black oil sunflower seeds over the top before delivering it outside on Newt’s Step. Sort of a Deer Sundae when in the bucket but once it’s spread out it’s definitely more like a Salad Bar • Normally they visit at dusk or a little later when only their silhouettes are visible but one day last week a group of five arrived early to dine in full daylight! It was shocking and stressful seeing them exposed like that so now I’m delivering the food based on how dark it is rather than at a specific time, especially important since we spring forward an hour this weekend • A cold brisk day here because of gusty winds, up to 50 mph, resulting in few birds to photograph. Let’s hope tomorrow is calmer • Thinking of Ukraine.
