South Cottage, Sissinghurst

Our first visit to Sissinghurst Castle Gardens this year. A sunny, if cold day making it very pleasant when out of the wind. Sissinghurst was the home of Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson for many years. south Cottage was where Harold had his study and many of his books.

There’s a considerable amount of history in this place and not just with the Bloomsbury set that these two were part of. It was also a prison for 3000 French POWs captured during the Seven Years war.

There were a good few spring bulbs in evidence, snowdrops still, crocuses and of course daffodils with more to come. In a couple of weeks time it will be spectacular.

We were there with Al and Liz who were over for the day. Much overeating ensued which is always par for the course on these days.
