Starfish Bombing Decoy

This is high on the moors above Halifax and was the operations bunker for a 'Starfish' site.
These were bombing decoys built to draw German bombers away from their intended targets. This particular one was to deflect bombers away from Leeds, and from some railway marshalling yards near Halifax.

It was built in 1941 and worked by lighting fires during an air raid to make the Luftwaffe think this is where their bombs had fallen.
