SPRING IS GETTING CLOSER

Spring has started to arrive in earnest. We've had lots of rain/snow mixture the last few days. This morning we had half a day off with more snow and high winds coming later today.

When high winds come from the east and the ice starts to breakup on Lake Winnebago, large "ice shoves" can grow taller than a house and push ashore and against many of the houses along the shoreline.

Ice breakup is just starting and I'm expecting the high winds today will cause a lot more ice to shove up onto the shoreline. I may drive the 20 miles (32km) to Big Winnie tomorrow to seek out bigger ice piles.

This is the largest inland lake in Wisconsin being some 60 miles long (97-100km) and over 20 miles wide (32km+). When the wind blows, there's nothing around to stop it and it blows a full gale.

Lake Winnebago is home to the largest fish found in Wisconsin...the Lake Sturgeon. They will live over 100 years and weigh well over 200 pounds (108kg) and measure in excess of 7 feet long (2.2m).

Best seen in Large.
