Wine the Ancient Way

Another day, another visit to a winery, one that we go past whenever we go into Reguengos, but had never visited. It's a fairly small one, José de Sousa, and is known for having preserved the ancient method of making wines in clay amphorae, of which they have 114, in an old underground cellar. No-one makes these huge amphorae, holding over 1000 litres, anymore, and they have no idea how old their oldest ones are. To clean them out, someone actually has to go inside and then be pulled out with a rope. They produce a red and a white purely from this wine, but mainly mix it with wines made in more modern ways. All very interesting. Two extras, a detail of one of their old barrels, and Paul's glasses at the tasting.

Instead of the Lent verses, I give you the episode of The Chosen that we watched lastnight, where Jesus transforms water into hundreds of litres of good wine at a wedding, here, plus Peter's wife treading grapes in a tank like we saw today. (Not sure the link will take you to the right place, but it’s Season 1, episode 5).

Gratefuls:
- two washes done and one dried, in spite of the dusty damp
- getting my jasmine planted at last (heck, the rocks are difficult)
- Mike and Paul almost filling the tree holes (also hard work)
