Love Film

..love poetry, love life.

Two films in two days. I felt urged to see them both, and both were passing back into the cinematic ether today (at local cinemas of interest).

Lord Byron
First time visit to the Byron cinema in Hucknall, stylishly renovated by new owners Ark. I popped into St Mary Magdalene Church for a few minutes where Lord Byron, Ada Lovelace and many other family members are buried inside the Church which is in a way a shrine to them. I'll return when I have more time; only 30 mins away.

and passed Ada Loveace's home edit with James Babbage in London on this trip.

The Northman (Robert Eggers (Dir) 2022)
A Norse prince avenges his fathers murder in the first century. Really enjoyed being transported into a paganistic world with it's rituals, violence animal-like living with acceptable glitziness and CGI in places, and hence not a classic in my opinion. Unsurprisingly it divided critics.

Not in the same class as "The Lighthouse" to me.

Benedetta (Paul Verhoeven (Dir) 2022)
In a similar way I really enjoyed this film too (but more) the previous day. Based on fact, it's about a 17th century lesbian nun proclaimed a saint. This devil fearing period a la "The Name of the Rose" is fascinating to me. Watched this one sitting in the comfortable arms of Sir Paul Smith at the Broadway.

Byron Quotes
There are four questions of value in life, Don Octavio. What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only love.

You don't love a woman because she is beautiful, but she is beautiful because you love her.

Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine.

The great art of life is sensation, to feel that we exist, even in pain.
