Puffin alert!

Tuesday

We had a lovely boat trip to Lunga and Staffa. The sea was calm, but the sky was overcast yet we had no rain till we got back to the site.

On Lunga we watched the puffins which were delightful as always, at the stage of collecting dried grass for making nests in their burrows, and finding a mate. However we think the puffins and the other birds are more plentiful on the Farnes and certainly a lot closer and more accessible. Mr C wanted to climb to the top of the highest bit of the island which was a bit freaky as it was a steep, slippy gully which seemed to career straight to the bottom of the cliff. There was no other way back that we could find so I just had to grit my teeth and keep the whimpering to a minimum. The swearing kept till I got down.

We loved Staffa. Although there were cruise ships around, and other boats, we managed to get the timing right for entering Fingal’s Cave so that it was empty apart from us. A magical experience. The geology is amazing, basalt columns having been formed by lava flow 60 million years ago. I’m glad we visited the Giants Causeway before, as this is much more impressive. It inspired Turner to paint it and Mendelssohn to compose the Hebridean overture, Fingal’s Cave.

It’s been a great day, apart from the second worst fish and chips we’ve ever had, bought from the Pier which the campsite recommended. Thick soggy batter, and limp, pale, cold chips.

Although we are connected to the campsite WiFi there appears to be no connection today, and there’s no phone or 4G either, so Blip might have to wait till tomorrow when we are on the move again and get 4G.
