Stuff and Nonsense

Common Whitethroat #60

What a gloriously sunny and warm May day we've had. I did my shift at the Butterfly House this morning, planting sunflowers, tomatoes and welcoming guests to the crane installation. It was lovely.

This afternoon we went for a walk along the canal from Spike Island. We were very surprised to see a small funfair on the grass in front of the Catalyst Museum - noisy and garish, so we quickly made our way out of earshot and sight and headed for the canal. It was very peaceful but the level of the water is now seriously low and I am sure that all sorts of wildlife are suffering. Apparently it used to be the responsibility of Fiddlers Ferry power station to feed the canal with water, but that closed down over 2 years ago. The council were supposed to work on a solution to feed it from Sankey Brook, but have literally done nothing and all they seem to be bothered about is relocating the fish in there so that they can continue to get money from the anglers that used to fish there. But what about the other wildlife that lives there???
Anyway, despite the ridiculously low water levels, we had a lovely walk and spotted some nice birds and the odd butterfly.
Today's blip is a common whitethroat that was eyeing up some insects at the top of this tree.
Also, in extras is a shot of some of the recently hatched cygnets that are currently located on the pond at Spike - cute or what?
