Above the Thames

I was in London yesterday helping my daughter with a work activity, which took us to the cable car over the Thames. This doesn't really go anywhere of any particular interest. Indeed, it was criticised at the time it was installed as a white elephant. And it is not the most attractive stretch of the river. But the views are quite spectacular with the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and the City of London in clear view,  and the Millennium Dome on the near shore. The Millennium Dome opened on 31 December 1999 and housed what I thought was an impressive exhibition to welcome in the 3rd millennium although that, too, came in for a lot of criticism. Now it is known as The O2 and is a major entertainment venue seating 20,000 people. I have been to some great concerts there including Leonard Cohen, who managed to make this vast space seem intimate.
