Macy Gray

Macy Gray is playing at St Luke’s, just next to Barrowlands. We get there by taxi from a hotel on the southside, through torrential rain. The beer is expensive, the support act is late, the crowd is small but vocal. We take refuge on the balcony, where the vote is good.

Macy seems quite out of it when she comes on stage, but sings her songs with gusto and joshes endlessly with the audience. Three costume changes later, the gig comes to a close in time for the 10:30 “curfew”. She has played several tracks off the first album, a few others that Kerry recognised, and a couple of her new album (that were quite catchy!)

We fail to find a taxi to take us back to the hotel, so we walk. Needing a pee, we venture into the Brazen Head, the archetypal Celtic bar, to use the facilities. I succumb to the mood of the place and order a Guinness, while Kerry takes her life in her hands and asks for a gin and tonic. They give her slimline without even asking!

Next stop is a chip shop. Chips and cheese were the recommendation of a man on the street, but I opt for daal, roti, and veg pakora. Which we eat back in our room (in strict contravention of the hotel’s food policy). Excellent!
