Over the Sands

This quaint old road sign in Cartmel harks back to the "Old Days" when people crossed Morecambe Bay on horse back.   Fifteen miles to Lancaster across the sand; its 30 miles via dry land on the  road. And Ulverston by road is 17 miles.    Now the maps have a warning "Public Rights of Way across Morecambe Bay are Dangerous" as you might be able to make out on the the map extract in extras snowing the route. Its been a public  route since the the days when the horse drawn stage coach went across the sands, but horses can run faster than the tide.  These days  4x4s get stuck in the mud if they are foolish enough to try it.
