The Bark Hut

We booked on a full day bus trip out to Arnhem Land with the traditional custodians to learn some of the culture of the place. Arnhem Land is a closed community and we thought it would be interesting. We got a message to say it has been cancelled due to Cultural Reasons what ever that might be. That was for Friday and we had arranged all our plans around that day. We were going to stay at Jabiru but have changed our plans and travelled closer to Darwin at a place called Bark Hut. 

You never know what you are going to get when planning a trip like this. Bark Hut is a roadside Inn, service station and has some accommodation and camp grounds. It’s lovely! We have about an acre of grassed lawns, water and power, a nice swimming pool ( yep, I had yet another swim) and very nice restaurant. Much nicer than Cooinda and half the price. 

They have pet snakes here, a pet crocodile, a pet buffalo and 2 emus. The huge restaurant/ hotel doesn’t have walls to keep it cooler, is made of bark and corrugated iron and lined with buffalo skulls, crocodile hides, rabbit traps and hurricane lanterns. Sounds awful but is quirky and our meal out tonight was delicious. 

It was only 210 kilometres so a nice short drive and we were set up by lunch time. For those who don’t travel by caravan I can let you know there are a heap of little jobs to do when packing up or setting up. Everything needs to be checked and double checked or things fall out of cupboards. We each have our jobs to do and we both check each other before driving off. One thing I like is that you have your own things with you and it’s like home when you are set up. We mostly cook our own food, have a fridge and freezer, gas and electric stove and grill, Satellite TV. Air conditioner, fan, diesel heater so we can cope with all weather. It’s certainly not for everyone. We have a small van compared to most these days, they are set up like palaces with slide out panels to make them even larger, coffee machines etc. ours is easier than the trailer or tent accommodation which we have had in the past.
