Wooldridge monuments

Thursday June 9
It was another hot day, as we continued our work in the warehouse.
We finished up about 3.30, then we went to look around the replica of an 1800s Old West town, called Cartwright Grove, which is located just behind the warehouse buildings. It is still a work in process, being built by volunteers over about the last 20 years. There were a couple of guys working on the school house, the current building under construction, and on of them broke off from his work, and showed us around, opening all the buildings for us. It is mainly open for holidays and festivals, such as July 4h, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, when all the buildings are decorated.
From there, we went to another spot that was recommended to us, the Wooldridge Monuments in Maplewood Cemetery. They were built for Colonel Henry G. Wooldridge, to commemorate family members and other loved ones of his life, from 1892 until Wooldridge's death on May 30, 1899. Woolridge is the only one actually buried at the site.
All eighteen monuments face east, like most of the gravestones in Maplewood Cemetery. The most prominent is a life-size likeness of Wooldridge himself, a 6-foot-tall marble statue in the center of the site, made in Italy. The fourteen other monuments surrounding Wooldridge are made of limestone. The largest of these represent Wooldridge on his horse, named "Fop". Behind these are replicas of a fox, a deer, and two hounds chasing them, representing Wooldridge's dogs "Towhead" and "Bob". The lot has been called "The Strange Procession Which Never Moves”. Quite a unique sight!
We had an early dinner at the Mayfield church, then went back to Fulton, where we are staying, and we all went too watch the local baseball game. The teams are comprised of college student baseball players from Kentucky and Indiana for the most part. A very different atmosphere to the big professional ball park we go to in Cincinnati, but still a lot of fun, and another way of being a part of the local community.
