Roman

We’re now in Arles an old Roman provincial capital. We cycled into town to see the amphitheatre and soak up the atmosphere. Arles is where Van Gogh painted many of his most well known pictures including the Bridge at Arles and the Sunflowers pictures.
The old roman Amphitheatre, in the photo is used for concerts  and events now.
In the city centre we watched in amazement as an enormous Motorhome drove into the centre of the town through large signs saying pedestrian zone only. It carried on until it couldn’t turn round, it couldn’t go down a one way street and the only other way out was down a very narrow  street lined with outdoor chairs and tables. All the streets are old and narrow and with low overhanging balconies.  The driver tried to reverse and nearly demolished a canopy outside a shop. We felt so sorry for the couple who were in this predicament because we’ve done almost similar things and it’s so embarrassing. It was a Swiss registered vehicle. No one really tried to help them. We couldn’t because we didn’t know the roads at all.
They did eventually escape. We could only imagine the stress factors involved!
