A bit of history

Our holiday cottage is in the village of Bowness on Solway.
In A.D 122 the Romans began building Hadrian’s Wall.  Its western end was in our village and it extended across the country about 75 miles ending at a place called Walls End on the North Sea Coast. At various places part of the Wall plus the remains of Roman forts still exist. They are a major tourist attraction.  Unlike Trump’s fence they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There is now a long distance trail which follows the line of the Wall across the country.
This morning we went to the little hut where the trail begins. It was fun to chat to a Canadian couple who were just about to set off to walk it full length overthe next few days. It looks as though the will have good weather.
