Icons

There are some sights that are so iconic that you never forget your first sight of them. The Sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar) is one of those. I saw much better sights (and took better photographs) of the Sugarloaf on subsequent days, but the first view of it through the window of the FGV windows was pretty impressive and so has to be my blip for today.

It was a funny old day. We were all "on duty" very early in order to get to the airport to fly from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro for the second half of the conference (our hosts have a site in each city). So basically the morning was spent on travelling in buses, sitting around in the airport, and then flying.... All fine, but quite time consuming.

We arrived in time for a late lunch at FGV, followed by a very interesting presentation by a Brazilian Supreme Court judge about fake news and other problems of post-truth politics. Very good indeed, especially when he was a bit more ad-libbing at the end in response to comments from others.

Then back in the bus and down to Copacabana to check in (the hotel lobby was an absolute zoo, but the hotel handled it quite well and gave us our keys with very little delay), and then drinks and snacks on the fourth floor terrace, giving us a chance to meet the students who have been here for two weeks on a summer school (well, it's the Brazilian winter....). There was music, and then there was dancing, and inevitably of course too many cocktails were consumed...

Like I said, a funny old day.
