The Lansdowne Picture Palace

Many of Sheffield's small neighbourhood cinemas have disappeared without trace.  This is a detail from one that has partially survived; it's now a local Sainsbury's shop, with student flats replacing the space originally taken up by the large auditorium at the back.
Its last incarnation, before eventual renovation, was as a nightclub, with its tiled exterior entirely painted black. So I'm glad to see that the original tiled frontage has been rehabilitated. Apparently it opened in 1914 and closed again after some minor air raid damage in 1940.  Eventually it was used for a range of other retail and leisure purposes. There's a little background detail here, along with an old photograph, now in the wonderful public library archives:

Otherwise... apart from some Blip catch-ups, I also caught up with the BBC's 'Ukrainecast' podcast today, and listened to a long interview with Olena Zelenska.  It seems that she's quite a private woman who is nevertheless overcoming her own preferences and doing her best to keep Ukraine in the public eye. Her less-publicised work on charitable and humanitarian projects is impressive too.  What a long drawn-out tragedy this war is. For the moment, I rarely find words to do it justice.
