Flight fight

It’s so easy to dismiss herring gulls as dull - or simply condemn them to the role of aerial vermin. The adults have a distinct beauty - pure white bodies with eyes of piercing yellow, but the juveniles can often appear dowdy - a mess of dingy browns. Yet on close inspection, these young birds are exquisitely marked, a quality hidden in their usual disgruntled hunched positions, but one so clearly evident when they stretch out their wings.

We come across them as we walk along the beach. These two are typically quarrelsome, annoying each other, possibly trespassing on each other’s patch of sand or fighting over a morsel of food.

Apologies for another day-late entry, and thanks again for all your lovely comments.
