Sheltering in the shade

Back on the common I wondered where the herds of cows that range widely over the National Trust's landscape had gone to. When I'd recently driven up the side of the Golden Valley's hillside, then across the plateau of the common itself and dropped down the other side into the next valley, there was no sign of the animals.

They can roam down many of the side lanes in search of fresh grass, but with these hot conditions all the vegetation seems scorched. I again went to the Old Lodge and there I found this small herd sheltering in the shade. I think they are the lucky ones. Or perhaos the owners of the other herds have removed them to shelter and be fed in their barns down in the valleys and combes.
