Grave of James Donnithorne and daughter Eliza

Today I took a splendid wander around the historic graveyard of St Stephens Anglican Church.  There is a lot to interest at this site and today I will focus on the grave in the photo.

The headstone reads:

"In memory of James Donnithorne Esq. For many years Governor of the Mint & a Judge in the honourable East India Company's Bengal Civil Service. Died 25th of May 1852.

Also of Eliza Emily,  last surviving daughter of the above. Died 20th May 1886." (Aged almost 65.)

Eliza is of particular interest because there is widespread speculation that she inspired the character of Miss Havisham in Charles Dickens' 1861 novel Great Expectations.

Eliza, born in Cape Town, South Africa, was Australian and lived and died in Newtown, where I live.

Thanks for hosting Bob.
