By the Edge of the Pond

Now that our temperatures are back to normal, I can venture out to the pond to see what's happening.  These are pipewort, a tiny aquatic plant that appears in late August.  It is a native species very common in New England.  It's stem, rather than being round, has seven sides.  The locals call the plant "Hatpin" resembling as it does a lady's device for securing their hat to their head.  Of course, women haven't used hatpins for over 100 years but the name still sticks.  Therein ends the lesson of the day! Welcome September!
