Peace in rest

The Queen died today.

The fact that she did so at the ripe old age of 96 and it still came as a shock to most is a testament to her enduring legacy. Perhaps that should be ‘legacy of endurance’.

For most of us, she has always been there and so it didn’t seem unnatural to assume that she always would be, but now we have a King and barring some King Ralph-esque disaster, that is what we will have for some time to come.

That she dedicated her life to the British public from an early age and saw that through until the very end is staggering. I’m sure she had many moments when she must have wondered why she bothered and were we really worth it anyway.

I feel neither one way or the other about the monarchy and if we are to believe what we read, as a family, they are just as messed-up as the rest of us, however I do respect and admire her stoicism and dedication to the role that was prematurely forced upon her.

We were lucky to have her and she has set the bar ridiculously high for those who follow behind her.

Over to you King Charles III.
