What did I see today...?

Sarria - Portomarin

Day Nine of our Camino and it was a glorious start - the sun actually rose for a start and we began our morning with a lovely breakfast in Sarria. Today was mostly a ramble through the countryside and it was quite nice not to have to do it in the rain (there were still signs of it though - see Owen's Blip!).

The path today mostly took us through small towns and villages, including one where we stopped for lunch and Owen's bag was kit-napped by the resident cat. It also made a try for my chorizo sandwich, but I was far too hungry (and the dog made a cuter face!).

Continuing the leisurely stroll we passed several pilgrim made memorials and markers today, ranging from the simple cross you can see in my Blip to some elaborate flags and crosses that passing pilgrims still add to. We also managed to look around several small churches and you can see an outtake of the memorial garden in my Blipfolio for the day.

The evening in Portomarin was probably the first where it started to feel holiday-like (discounting the meal in Sarria). We had decided not to rush on at this point so we wandered through the town, Owen and myself heading up to see the church (unfortunately shut) and the others buying food so we could have breakfast on the road the next day. After dinner we wandered down to the bridge into town and just watched the sunset - absolutely glorious.

Fifth Entry - Memorial - Spanish graveyards are very different to the ones we're used to - no rows of crosses in the ground, but open spaces surrounded by family memorial walls.
