The Wallace Monument

This morning after the night of celebrations Mrs CBL and I headed north back home.  On the way we stopped at Stirling to visit the historic Wallace Monument.

The monument was completed in 1869 after eight years' construction.  It stands some 220ft or 67m high, and Abbey Craig, the volcanic outcrop it is built on, adds a further 300ft or 91m, meaning that the top of the monument stands 520ft above the River Forth below.

To reach the top of the tower you climb up 246 steps passing through two halls and a chamber on the way to the Crown Spire, where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across Scotland’s heartland but only after you have got your breath back!
