On the bank of the big pond

Went to the Manawa wetland near New Lynn town centre. The Auckland Council page starts with a sentence which clearly applies to somewhere near Bethells Beach on the other side of the Waitakere Range.

Correctly, the information tells us that the area where this wetland is being developed was once a source of clay for the nearby Ambrico Brickworks. There has been a lot of new housing built adjacent to this are, which is fed by a stream running from the Waitakeres through New Lynn and into the Whau River near Avondale.

That such a great effort is clearly being made to create a stable and functional wetland here is hopeful for the future. Even as it is, there are many waterbirds and there is lots of space for children to play. While I was there so were six youngsters having a loud and happy time exploring the stream bank, the vegetation, and generally learning (informally) about their environment.

As an extra, I've included a photo of the large pond, which ahs a boardwalk out into the pond.
