Walk from Cascais to Guincho Beach

BACKBLIP

The forecast today was for a high of 30 degrees! Yes, 30, on the first day of October! Too high for my Scottish blood to endure walking in…. But we did plan on doing this two hour coastal walk so we decided to start early and get the service bus back. Breakfast first and saying goodbye to the ladies of the Cafe, as they are closed on a Sunday and this is our last day in Cascais. What a delight it was going here first thing with great coffee and pastries and great hospitality.

The path to Guincho is wide - to accommodate walkers, cyclists and joggers. It’s a fabulous walk skirting the coast with the Atlantic sea just, there! I love a sea walk. There were many groups of serious cyclists on the road, so many must come here for a holiday or for training and probably local groups too. They are all skinny with thighs of steel!

It was around a two hour walk to the beautiful beaches of Guincho and as it was a Saturday there were many locals there with their surf boards. The Atlantic rollers make it a great spot for surfing so we sat watching them, on the gorgeous soft sand, eating our Pasteis de Nata. It was starting to get really hot sitting there so checked the bus times and there was one due in 10 mins so off we wandered to the bus stop. Again, we use the Viagem card for travel here, the buses have air con and got a seat to relax and enjoy the scenery on the journey back to Cascais.

Walked back to the apartment for a brief while as S wanted to get bout paddleboarding down at the Duchess beach. All I wanted to do was eat egg and chips, it was around 3:30 and hadn’t eaten much, so I grabbed my book and sat at the cafe next door to us under a sun brolly with my book. I said I would be down to see him but time went on and by the time I decided to leave I got a message to say he was finished . Oops. I walked down to meet him and we wandered round the little streets of the old town.

It was a full on day clocking up 26k steps so handily, around 8pm, we shuffled over the road to the other favourite restaurant next to us for food. I had prawns cooked in garlic (amazing) and S had some steak dish.

Back over the road, We packed up the cases ready for an early start tomorrow.

A great five days in Cascais. Weather superb, great food, fabulous and easy day trips on the bus, train and foot. Tomorrow, onward to Lisbon.
