Strumming along

We spent the day at Wicken Fen and the evening at the Three Tuns having a strum along with people from Uketok who are here for tomorrow’s festival.

We really enjoyed Wicken Fen despite the coolness and greyness of the day. Fascinating learning about the history, geology and conservation of one of the last fragments of Fenlands.

Although we saw a number of birds, most noticeably a little owl and the merest glimpse of a kingfisher we remarked how few birds there were around. We took a boat ride along Wicken Loade through the reeds, rushes and sedge fen, squeezing along a very narrow channel.

Conservation animals are being used to help manage the Fen. Konic horses from Eastern Europe act as fine lawnmowers while shaggy highland cattle rip and tear at the grass.

The strum went well, the technology worked and a fine time was had by all.
