tempus fugit

Adoption day

Today we adopted three ex-battery hens via The British Hen Welfare Trust, a charity that rescues redundant birds that would otherwise be slaughtered after their egg laying lives are over - at  only 18 months.

Hens that have spent their lives in small cages are passed over to people who can provide a more caring and natural lifestyle that allows the chooks to flourish and regrow their  tattered plumage. (In fact they were better feathered that I expected but their combs were very pallid.)

This was at one of the rehoming centres to which a batch of birds is taken for registered adoptees to collect at a designated time. Volunteers picked up each bird (extra)  and gently handed  them over to be transported back to their new homes. It was a smooth operation and the girls are now installed in a hutch to settle overnight.

Updates to follow.
